The silk camisole as a summer wardrobe layer
The silk camisole as a working wardrobe layer — paired under linen, sheer blouses, and open-knit summer fabrics.
A silk camisole worn under clothing is the most underused garment in most summer wardrobes. It solves three problems simultaneously: it prevents sheer summer fabrics from being see-through, it creates a smooth base layer that reduces fabric friction against the skin, and it provides passive moisture management throughout the day. It does all of this at a weight of roughly 30–50 grams, which is barely perceptible.
Why silk specifically
A cotton or synthetic camisole performs the first function (covering) adequately but manages the second and third less well. Silk's satin-weave surface slides against outer fabrics rather than gripping them — the cause of that uncomfortable midday bunching that happens when a camisole and a dress fabric cling together. Silk's protein-fibre structure also absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture before it feels damp against the skin, which means it manages perspiration throughout a warm day without becoming uncomfortable.
At 12–14 momme, a silk habotai or charmeuse camisole is light enough that it adds no perceptible warmth beneath a linen shirt or summer dress.
Pairing it in a wardrobe
Under sheer linen: a linen weave that is transparent when the sun is behind you becomes opaque with a camisole beneath. The camisole should be in a colour close to skin tone rather than white — white beneath sheer fabric creates a more visible layer than a nude or light blush tone.
Under open-knit summer tops: the camisole acts as the coverage layer while the outer top provides the visual texture. The combination reads as intentional rather than functional.
Under a cotton voile blouse: the silk base layer provides the smooth surface, the voile provides the texture and drape. The combination is cooler than the voile alone because the silk manages the moisture at the skin contact layer rather than letting the voile saturate.
Care in summer conditions
Summer use means more frequent washing. A 12–14 momme silk camisole worn as an underlayer should be washed after each wear — it has absorbed perspiration. Hand-washing in cool water with a silk-appropriate detergent, rolled in a towel, and flat-dried takes about four minutes. The piece will last for years if washed consistently.
