Choosing lingerie for a tall, slim figure
Torso length, string-strap gape, and why long-line styles and high-cut briefs work proportionally for tall frames.
A tall, slim figure — above approximately 5'8" with a slender frame — creates a different set of fit challenges from those of a petite frame, but the logic is the same: standard sizing is built around a reference body, and when the proportions diverge, specific adjustments are needed.
Bra fit for tall frames
Bra fit for tall frames is primarily a band and strap question. Cup and band sizing are height-independent — a correctly measured 32B is a 32B regardless of height — but the physical length of the strap, and the position of the cup relative to the waistline and underbust, are affected by torso length.
Strap length: tall frames often exhaust standard strap adjustment at maximum extension without achieving the correct cup position. If straps at full extension are still leaving the cup sitting lower than the underwire line, the strap is too short. Options: bras with extended strap length (some boutique brands offer this), or strap extenders (lightweight accessories that add 3–5 cm to the adjustment range).
String-strap gape: narrow shoulder straps on a wider shoulder often migrate inward and away from the intended attachment point. This is a proportional problem: the strap attachment on the cup is positioned for a narrower shoulder. Wide-set strap attachment and racerback styles resolve this by anchoring differently.
Full-length styles
For chemises, slips, and sleepwear, hemline length is the key variable. Check the garment length specification against your own torso measurement. A "midi-length" chemise described for a 5'5" body will be a short chemise on a 5'10" body.
Long-line styles — camisoles that extend to the hip, longline bralettes, maxi-length chemises — are proportionally better suited to tall frames because the length reads as intentional rather than insufficient.
High-cut briefs: on a tall, slender frame, a high-cut brief — positioned at the hip rather than the natural waist — creates a longer visual line between brief and bra. This is a styling observation, not a correction; it is the same principle that drives the choice of high-cut brief on petite frames, applied to the opposite proportion.
What to look for in boutique sizing
Boutique lingerie vendors with tall-specific ranges typically offer extended strap lengths and explicitly state garment lengths in their specifications. When these are not listed, ask the vendor before ordering — any quality boutique should be able to give you the torso length for their pieces.
