Lingerie sizing for tall women
Torso length, long-line bralettes, and wider underbands — what to look for when standard sizing runs short.
Standard lingerie sizing is built around a reference body of average height — typically 5'4" to 5'6" in UK and European sizing conventions. For tall women, broadly defined as those above 5'8", this reference creates predictable gaps: torso-length dimensions that run short, strap lengths that max out without sufficient adjustment, and chemise and sleepwear hemlines that end several centimetres above where they were designed to sit.
This is not a problem with sizing per se — it is a mismatch between the reference body and the actual wearer. The solutions are systematic.
Bra fit for tall frames
Band and cup: standard band and cup sizing applies to all heights — these dimensions are based on circumference and volume, which are height-independent. A tall woman with a 32-inch underbust and a C cup difference wears a 32C regardless of her height.
Strap length: this is the frequent failure point. Standard strap adjustment on many bras maxes out at a range suited for average-height torsos. If straps at maximum extension still sit the cup too low (visually and functionally), look for bras with extended strap range or independent strap extension accessories. Some boutique brands offer additional strap length as a feature.
Gore position: on a longer torso, the proportional position of the underbust relative to the waist is different from the reference. This rarely affects bra gore placement, but in strapless or structured styles, the visual relationship between the bra and the waistline is height-dependent.
Chemises, slips, and sleepwear
Hemline length is the primary sizing variable for tall women in full-length pieces. A chemise described as "mid-thigh length" on a 5'5" body will sit significantly higher on a 5'10" body.
Approach: measure the torso length from shoulder to your intended hemline position. Compare against the garment's described length, which quality vendors will list in the product specifications. If the garment length is not listed, contact the vendor before ordering — it is standard information that any boutique should be able to provide.
Long-line styles: longline bralettes, long-line camisoles, and maxi-length slips are proportionately better suited to tall frames than short styles, because the additional length reads as appropriate rather than insufficient on a longer torso.
Brands and sizing
Some boutique lingerie brands produce extended-length sizing or explicitly indicate torso length in their sizing specifications. On CougarMetropolis, use the height specification in product filters where available, or consult the vendor directly before ordering.
