What momme weight means in silk fabric
From 6mm sheers to 22mm heavyweights — which momme weights suit lingerie versus sleepwear, explained without jargon.
Momme weight is the standard measure of silk fabric density — a number that tells you how heavy the fabric is per unit of area and, by extension, how opaque, how durable, and how drape-heavy the fabric will be. It is the single most useful number for assessing silk fabric quality, and it is rarely printed on garment labels, which makes knowing how to find and interpret it a meaningful advantage when buying silk lingerie.
What momme weight measures
The momme (mm) unit is defined as the weight in pounds of a piece of silk fabric measuring 45 inches wide by 100 yards long. A 16-momme silk fabric would weigh 16 pounds at that dimension. The higher the number, the heavier the fabric per unit of area.
In practice, momme weight ranges from around 4 (very fine gauze or chiffon overlays) to 30+ (heavyweight silk used in upholstery and some suiting). For lingerie and sleepwear, the useful range is 6 to 30 momme.
Momme weight by application
6–8 momme: extremely sheer and lightweight. Used for silk chiffon overlays, veiling, and very fine scarves. Not suitable as a standalone garment — you see through it clearly. Occasionally used as an overlay layer in lingerie.
12–14 momme: the typical range for silk habotai (plain-weave silk) and lighter charmeuse. Suitable for a standalone camisole or chemise at 14mm; slightly transparent at 12mm. The fabric has a delicate quality and requires careful handling — fine enough to snag and run.
16–19 momme: the ideal range for most lingerie and sleepwear. At this weight the fabric is opaque enough for solid wear, drapes beautifully, has sufficient structural resilience for regular use and washing, and the silk fibroin is dense enough to provide the full temperature-regulating benefit. Most well-made silk slips, camisoles, and pyjama tops are in this range.
19–22 momme: the quality tier for pyjama sets, robes, and heavier camisoles intended for cooler conditions or for durability over many years of regular wear. Noticeably heavier and more opaque; the drape is still present but more structured than lighter weights.
22+ momme: heavyweight silk used in robes, travel pyjamas, and premium pyjama sets. The fabric has real substance — it hangs with authority, wears like a finer woven fabric, and will withstand years of use with proper care.
Where to find the momme weight
Boutique vendors on CougarMetropolis typically specify the momme weight in the product description or in the fabric notes. If it is not listed, contact the vendor — a reputable boutique will always be able to tell you. If a vendor cannot state the momme weight, the silk is likely at the lower end of the weight range and may be a polyester-silk blend.
