The longline bra: what it is and how it fits

Additional support mechanics, torso-length measurement, and how to style a longline bra under fitted tops.

The longline bra: what it is and how it fits

A longline bra extends below the underbust to cover some portion of the torso — from a few centimetres below the band in a modest extension, to the natural waist or below in longer styles. The extension serves functional and styling purposes that change what the garment is and how it should be fitted.

Why the extension matters structurally

In a standard bra, all vertical load is distributed across the band and the straps — a relatively narrow band that sits just below the bust. In a longline, the load is distributed across a larger surface area, because the extended body panel rests against a longer section of the torso.

This has specific benefits for full busts: the larger surface area reduces the load per unit of area, which can make a longline more comfortable for extended wear than a standard bra of the same cup size. It also provides more stability for the underwire, because the cups are anchored both at the band and at the extended panel below.

The additional support also benefits people with lower back sensitivity or conditions where concentrated band pressure on the ribcage is uncomfortable, because the longline distributes the equivalent pressure over a larger area.

Measuring for a longline

Standard bra sizing applies to the band and cup of a longline. In addition to your usual band and cup measurements, take a torso length measurement from the underbust to the point where you want the garment to end — typically the natural waist or the top of the hip.

Compare this measurement against the vendor's description of the garment's body length. A longline that is too short will simply function as a standard bra with a slightly deepened band; one that is too long will create excess fabric at the bottom that bunches under clothing.

Style notes under fitted tops

A longline bra under a close-fitting top creates a visible waistline definition — the difference between the bra cup and the extended panel creates a visual layer at the underbust. Under a fine knit, this is often visible and intentional (a longline bra worn as a visible base layer). Under a woven fabric, it may create a visible edge.

If the intention is for the longline to be invisible under clothing, the fabric weight and texture should be minimal — a very fine mesh or smooth microfibre — and the bottom edge of the longline should be carefully positioned to not create a visible ridge at the waist.

For visible wear — worn as a base layer under an open blazer or deliberately shown above a high-waisted skirt — the longline is a styling object as much as a structural one. In this context, the lace construction and the fabric quality of the extended panel become as important as the cup fit.

Longline bralettes

A longline bralette (without underwire) is a common casual-wear form — it provides light support with the torso-length coverage of a longline and is often worn as outerwear under a jacket or cardigan. Sizing follows the same logic: band and cup for the support structure, torso measurement for the panel length.
