Bodysuit sizing for an hourglass figure
Waist definition, snap-crotch fit, and fabric behaviour on a defined waist-to-hip ratio — clearly explained.
A bodysuit on an hourglass figure presents a specific combination of challenges: the defined waist requires a garment that accommodates the waist-to-hip differential without creating bulk or pulling, the snap-crotch position needs to work with the torso length, and the fabric choice significantly affects how well all of this comes together.
The waist-to-hip differential
An hourglass figure typically has a waist measurement 10 or more inches smaller than the hip measurement. A bodysuit sized to the hip will have a waist that is too large; sized to the waist, the hip will be too tight. This is the fundamental tension in bodysuit sizing for defined waist-to-hip proportions.
Solutions:
Look for bodysuits with waist shaping. Side seams shaped to follow the waist, or darts at the waist on woven styles, allow the garment to accommodate a narrower waist without the garment appearing loose and shapeless at the waist.
Stretch fabric: bodysuits in stretch fabric — jersey, stretch lace, or stretch modal — will accommodate the differential through fabric stretch. The bodysuit takes on the waist measurement through stretch contraction and the hip measurement through extension. This works well as long as the fabric's stretch range covers the differential.
Size to the hip; assess the waist. For most stretch bodysuits, sizing to the hip and relying on the stretch for waist accommodation is the practical approach. If the vendor provides waist measurements in the size chart, verify the waist figure is within the stretch range.
Torso length and snap-crotch position
The snap-crotch position is the second main fit variable. A bodysuit with a snap crotch positioned for average torso length will pull uncomfortably upward in a longer torso and bunch in a shorter one.
Measure from the top of the shoulder, over the bust, down through the torso to the crotch point. This is your torso length. The vendor should specify the torso length for each size; if they do not, this is a valid question to ask before ordering.
For an hourglass figure, the waist position on a longer torso is different from the reference body, which can affect where the bodysuit's waist shaping (if any) sits. Check the waist seam position in the vendor's photographs — on a fitted bodysuit, it should sit at the natural waist or just below.
Fabric for the hourglass figure
Stretch jersey (modal jersey, cotton-jersey, stretch silk jersey) is the most forgiving fabric for hourglass proportions because it accommodates the differential in all directions.
Woven silk or charmeuse requires more precise sizing because it does not stretch. A woven bodysuit on an hourglass figure should have built-in waist shaping; without it, the garment will either be too loose at the waist or too tight at the hip.
Stretch lace works on the same principle as stretch jersey — the elastic in the lace construction accommodates the differential. Check that the stretch percentage is sufficient for your specific differential.
